The dharma of fire is the same wherever it is: in a poor man’s house, in a rich man’s house, in America, in Antarctica, or in the Himalayas. It gives light and heat. The flame always points upwards. Even if we keep the lamp upside down, the flame will burn upwards. The message is that our mind should be focused on the Atman, the Self wherever we are. The lamps remind us of our dharma to realise our divine nature.
One lamp can light several others. You can even light another 1000 lamps, and still the flame and the light of the first lamp will remain as it is. By becoming manifold, the light looses nothing. The lights of Deepavali represent Brahman and creation.
Feeding empty stomachs, lighting blown-out divas (Deepwali lamps) and bringing light to those whose lives are in darkness is the true spirit of Deepavali. This is true prayer. More about Deepwali at http://www.amritapuri.org/3575/deepavali.aum

"Navaratri is a festival that is celebrated all over India. The word nava-ratri itself means “nine nights.” We are presently living in the night, in the darkness of ignorance. The Navaratri Puja signifies the removal of this internal darkness and the dawning of the light of knowledge. In this way, when the nine nights are finished, the 10th Day comes: “Vijayadashami.” Here, vijayadoes not mean “victory” in the ordinary sense. Here, it means breaking the shackles and the limitations of the mind and attaining complete and total freedom. The word navam also means “new.” When all the papas [negative tendencies] of the mind are washed away, we get a new birth; we are born again. We then understand that this body is the abode of the Parashakti [the Supreme Power], we experience the wonder and freshness of the Atma [Self] everywhere." From Amma's 2006 Navaratri speech

Growing a garden? The Ma Center is doing a survey to see what humanitarian projects the N. American satsangs are doing in 2013-2014. We have a pretty good idea what our mothers kitchens and our fundraisers have done, but many of us are doing Greenfriend projects at home; by growing our own food, saving seeds, raising tulsi, or in other eco ways. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW YOU ARE BEING A GREENFRIEND THIS WEEK, so we can be counted in Amma's global work. Pictures, video, or short stories are also appreciated. Mahalo!

Amrita Yoga

What is Amrita Yoga?
Yoga-Sudents-GroupAmrita Yoga offers a holistic approach to asana practice uniquely imbued with awareness and devotion; it teaches the art of tuning to one's true being, a deep journey within, and a practice of connecting with one's own essence.
Amrita yoga is a practice that can inspire, open the heart, and allow students to let go of both the past and the future. What remains is the present moment, where one can listen to the true Self, with love and awareness, and reach a state of deep internal peace. Here, the mind and the senses can calm down, and a new perspective on life can unfold, where lightness, love, awareness, and joy can become an integrated part of one's being.
